Is a keynote speech necessarily the highpoint of the conference for the audience? When the speaker is an international celebrity, if nothing else, the audience will have had the pleasure of seeing the speaker in person. But in healthcare where there are few global celebrities, the keynotes can be just as boring as elsewhere. Not so at Health 2.0 Europe, where you could hear a pin drop during the session.
As the organizer, I of course felt that we were proposing an exciting selection with Etienne Caniard from France, Pieter Vos of the Netherlands, and Morten E Petersen of Denmark. We would be taking the audience on a journey from a country that is just starting to recognize the important of Health 2.0, France, to the Netherlands that has finished a public consultation on the subject and even translated its report to English so that others can benefit from it around the world, and finally to one, Denmark, whose citizens can already access their electronic health record and exchange on a national portal, without knowing about the 2.0 movement.
However, I didn't realize just how well the chemistry would work amongst the speakers who had not previously appeared together....Read on for analysis, testimonials, slides the DUTCH REPORT on HEALTH 2.0 in English, and what is happening in the state of Denmark !
Etienne Caniard was invited to observe the preceding sessions and provide France's perspective on Health 2.0; this had never been expressed in a public forum. And given that there had previously been no conference assembling the many European Health 2.0 innovators, no preparation for this speech was really possible. I don't know that many people could reply as eloquently as did Etienne Caniard! Furthermore, since he knew in advance that he could not invent a Health 2.0 policy that morning, we sincerely thank him for having accepted an exercise which could only leave French Health 2.0 supporters hoping for more. France is representative of the vast majority of countries, as, to our knowledge, only the Netherlands has undertaken a public consultation on Health 2.0 And only Denmark has a portal going as far as it does.
Etienne Caniard's post-conference quote is thus very exciting. And so we are looking forward to seeing how Health 2.0 will unfold in the coming months and years in France and elsewhere. It is not easy to move a country where large institutions play an important role, but the "times, they are a-changing." as this quote demonstrates.
"It was very important for an institution in charge of the quality
of care, such as the HAS (French Health Authority) to be present at
this first European edition of Health 2.0. In so doing, we were able to
verify firsthand that all of the Health Care Actors have taken hold of
the new tools and that institutions must think differently. It’s not
about finding new solutions to unresolved problems but to envisage a
different organization that can disrupt or overturn our approaches to Health Care" Etienne Caniard
Pieter Vos of the Netherlands was invited to present "the" Dutch report on Health 2.0, a report whose contents the Dutch council RVZ had developed in part through use of Social Media techniques ; this was the first time that the report would be presented outside the Netherlands. Please note that the council RVZ is an independent group advising the Ministry and not part of the Dutch govenment itself.
The English language version is available below and it is a quite rich text with many references and thoughts regarding Health 2.0 seen from the perspective of the different health care actors. It undoubtedly does not go as far as many would wish, in terms of concrete realizations. However, it is an important step which I hope will be repeated in many countries around Europe, if not in the world.
"Quite
amazing and very hopeful: so many people being busy with 2.0. The
energy and passion to do things better in health care. And to share
visions and knowledge about health 2.0. Such a conference not only
brings people together on a mission, but stimulates international
coordination and collaboration, necessary in my point of view, for
future health care. And last but not least, this conference undoubtedly will boost Dutch national efforts concerning health 2.0 policy."

Morten Petersen was invited to explain the story of the Danish eHealth portal Sundhed.Dk which enables Dutch citizens to both access the national eHealth record and programs and to exchange. The Danish, up until the conference, have been using 2.0 approaches naturally, ie without a conscious effort to be part of 2.0. In fact, Morten asked me in preparation if we agreed to the Wikipedia definition of Health 2.0, as a reference for his comments. :-) (And yes we do agree to those definitions). So, this was the first time that the CEO of Sundhed.Dk, used to presenting to e-health conferences assembling IT experts, was presenting the portal in light of the Health 2.0 movement. And the audience was indeed very attentive to this example which shows how, with a common portal, so many of the 2.0 services can be integrated in one place, whether for professionals or consumers.
For example, the citizen services available on Sundhed.DK are:
E-services (booking, prescription renewal, consultation) (log on) • E-commerce (pharmacies) (log on) • Comparison of prices, quality and accessibilty Information about prevention and treatment • Medical information (eg. information about treatments) • Waiting list information from hospitals • Patient satisfaction mesaures on every hospital dep. • Smileys for every hospital • Preventive medicine • Health laws and regulations • Patient to patient dialogue – connecting patients coping with similar issues Access to own health data (log on) • Cross-sectorial personal electronic medicine profile • Patients’ medical history (since 1977) • Electronic Health Record (from hospital records) • Online Donor Registration and access to own data
And yet Morten Petersen notes that there is much more to be done : “It was a great opportunity to present The Danish e-Health Portal at Health 2.0 conference in Paris. Though we offer the Danish citizens many empowering services it was very inspiring to get a worldwide glance of the newest technical solutions, which will involve and engage people in their health in still more ways. I look forward to take advantage of the contacts I made and the lessons I earned. Thank you for a very interesting, high-level and professional conference”

So, it's no surprise that the panel was indeed very exciting. Contrary to other conferences, the Keynote speakers had agreed to attend the entire conference, and were honestly excited to learn about the services being presented. At the same time, they all very humbly realized though much they ad to learn and in particular from one another...and far more than if they had been listening to speakers from another continent. Secondly, they had come together by choice, and were not not forced to adopt a common perspective.
But after, all is said done, what should you do? Please decide for yourselves..That's 2.0!
